Eperosa Magnolia Shiraz 2022
The Magnolia Shiraz 2022 is sourced from the younger vines on the Magnolia Road block, with plantings dating back to 1986. Now 38 years old, these vines are cultivated with the same care and attention as Eperosa’s oldest plantings, benefiting additionally from greater diversity in soil types and vine genetics. The result is a wine of impressive depth and complexity that significantly overdelivers at its price point.
This organically farmed, single-vineyard Shiraz comprises fruit from vines planted in 1986 (50%, dry farmed), 2010 (33%, dry farmed), and 2017 (17%). The majority of contributing soils are deep granitic alluvial sands, while the 2017 vines grow in shallower sands scattered with mica and rose quartz, overlying podzolic clay. The vineyard’s elevation ranges from 305 to 335 metres, with cooling influences from cold air drainage flowing through three gullies and the higher Eden Valley above.
Bright aromas of blueberries, redcurrants, and rhubarb open into savoury layers of game, provincial herbs, iron, violets, liquorice, cassis, and a touch of pepper. The palate showcases refined red and black fruits—raspberry, redcurrant, and blackberry tart—with a luxurious, elegant progression through the mid-palate. There is energy, liveliness, and impressive fruit persistence, all carried on fine, svelte tannins. A beautifully crafted wine that punches well above its weight midweek and stands confidently beside premium offerings on the weekend. Classic Barossa Shiraz with a refined, cool-climate elegance.
