MMAD Vineyard
The old vines of Blewitt Springs are a precious resource and an important part of Australia’s viticultural heritage. In early 2021, MMAD Vineyard was purchased by a quartet made up of winemakers Martin Shaw and Adam Wadewitz, and Masters of Wine Michael Hill Smith and David LeMire. MMAD takes its name from their first initials. The MMAD Vineyard wines aim to reflect the unique terroir of Blewitt Springs and the rare old vines that grow there.

In recent years Michael, Martin, Adam, and David have worked together closely on other single vineyard based projects including Tolpuddle Vineyard in Tasmania, and the Shaw + Smith single vineyard wines from Balhannah and Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills. From a vintage that was both late and cool, the 2023 MMAD Shiraz offers up remarkable intensity without ever feeling heavy. Picked over an extended window from vines planted in 1941, the fruit was handled gently - some whole bunch, a mix of concrete and large-format oak - to draw out perfume and shape rather than sheer power.

And it shows. There’s spice here, but not in a showy way - more like a quiet thread of anise, pepper, and earth stitched through a core of dark cherry, cassis and rose. You get lift, structure and a mineral pulse thanks to the sandy, ironstone-rich soils of Blewitt Springs. Tannins are firm but fine, with graphite grip that gives the wine its frame.

This is a wine that’s not looking to be loud. The late season gave a wide picking window, allowing Mmad to harvest fruit at optimal ripeness. As a result, concentration and depth of flavour are balanced withlovely, cool-season aromatics. Intense red fruit and bakingspice continue through to a silky mid-palate, where lengthytannins effortlessly tie it all together. The grapes were mostly destemmed, and fermented in wood and concrete beforeaging in large, old French oak.

Grown on Maslin sand, with the oldest grenache vines planted in '39. Floral and sultry, with intense red fruits, dark raspberry, macerated strawberry and pomegranate juice, cracked whole spices, coal dust. There are black cherry notes, too, with a certain darkness to the vivid and lively fruit profile, the old vines having their say, perhaps. That quality is repeated on the palate, with the silkiness those vines yield a feature of all the releases thus far, the tannins resolute and resolved, carrying the flavours long. There’s a clear thread emerging with the MMAD wines that tell a distinctive story of place, and it’s one that’s exciting to watch unfold.

Alc/Vol: 14.0%

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0550/6662/4209/files/regions_mmadvineyards_grenacheNV_f25604db-88c5-4273-ac36-35c376a1fff8.png?v=1761823992
tasting-mmad-vineyard-blewitt-springs-grenache-2024
MMAD Vineyard Blewitt Springs Grenache 2024

A cool, wet winter was followed by a mild ripening season, allowing the dry grown Grenache to ripen to its full potential. Fruit was hand-picked, and bunches mostly destemmed before fermenting in wood and concrete, then aging in French oak for around nine months. The nose is bursting with fresh cherries and florals with more complex, red fruit flavours on the plush mid-palate. Fine mineral tannins add complexity and structure.

Located in the dress circle of Blewitt Springs, MMAD Vineyard has Grenache that was first planted in 1939, as well as Shiraz and Chenin Blanc, the oldest of which were planted in 1941 and 1964 respectively. The vineyard has the fine Maslin sands found in Blewitt Springs, and is exposed to the fresh sea breezes from the south-west.
