Dilettantes Sangiovese 2018
Marnie Roberts and Kate Giles are Dilettante wine.
Essentially they are just two people who love wine, love the Clare Valley and simply ADORE sangiovese. We have a great climate and soil profile for the variety, and the vineyard is run by a couple of awesome guys who love what they do and the vines they nurture. Sometimes it really is just great fruit, picked at the right time, and thrown into some decent barrels. We taste it, and we work out when it is ready for bottle then off we go. This really is about as simple as it gets. Great fruit. Have a great time turning it into wine.
Because this is a bit on the side. For months, Marnie and Kate called it their #cheekysangioproject.
Then we thought it was ready for the bottle and we should give it a name…
Dilettare (in Italian, because that is where I first tasted Sangiovese juice on my fingers!), means: to delight and to entertain.
Pretty perfect fit, really.
Single site, Clare Valley.
Picked, left to sit a while before we pressed it off and popped it into some old barrels. And just let it do its thing. The acid and sugars were pretty ideal, and the relatively neutral oak was a good call. Dark fruits, slurpy and with a touch of structure from the tannin.
Raspberry and a touch of good dark cocoa. Plush across the palate, with fine tannins adding some texture. Star anise and a smidgeon of white pepper. Length and texture.
