Elderslie Hills Blend #2 Gamay 2019
Concentrated juicy red and darker fruits with hints of pastille and some floral violet notes. A savoury back-bone with hints of ferrous, black tea and potting soil, all backed with ripe and subtle, yet persistent tannins and vibrancy.
Hand-Picked, Hand Sorted, fermented predominantly as whole berry with 10% whole bunch, fermentation using ambient temp with no additions. Gentle pump overs with 14 days on skins, Basket pressed to old French oak and then racked and bottled in December 2019.
Elderslie have worked with the Maple Ridge vineyard in the Hahndorf area for many years now and were involved with the decision to plant Gamay right from the beginning. They felt the red/brown clay over ironstone soils were ideal for the grape. There is a tie in with Adam’s previous tenure at Best’s Vineyard, with one of the Gamay clones sourced from the heirloom vineyards there. The vines are slightly north west facing and the vineyard sits at 380m with great sun exposure creating perfect conditions for ripening Gamay.
