The Magnolia 1896 Shiraz is sourced from the oldest vines on Eperosa’s Magnolia Road vineyard, covering a total area of 0.45 hectares at an elevation of 315 metres. These venerable vines are dry-farmed in shallow sands with mica-laden clay at depth. The block is significantly influenced by cold air drainage from the three surrounding gullies, as previously described. 

The vines are meticulously maintained, with detailed rod and spur pruning, and undergo shoot and bunch thinning to manage yield and enhance quality. The fruit is both handpicked and hand sorted. 

There is something uniquely special about the fruit from old vines—an intangible ‘X’ factor that brings an extra layer of depth and complexity. As the saying goes, “They’re not good because they’re old, they’re old because they’re good.” The continued existence of a vineyard for over a century is testament to the inherent quality of its vines—an enduring quality clearly present in the 1896 Shiraz.  

Complex, cerebral, and utterly captivating. Notes of wagyu jus, enoki mushrooms, provincial herbs, charcoal, and carbon intermingle in a magical combination of fruit, minerals, and earthy provincial flavours. Layers of Asian umami and soy add a savoury richness. The wine evokes the sensation of standing in a vineyard soil pit, with the scent of earth, fresh minerals, and broken vine roots rising from the ground.
