Jericho Blewitt Springs Grenache 2019
The second release in this range is a small production of an individual vineyard Grenache from Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. 20% of the fruit was hand picked and the whole bunches were tipped into the bottom of an open fermenter and the remaining one & half tonnes were crushed on top of the whole bunches. Normal fermentation then occurred for 10 days. Following this time they then crushed the whole bunches and this allowed an extended fermentation and produced unique characters and flavours. The inclusion of the whole bunches produces a wine with much more aromatic aromas and the stalks add a further dimension and tannins to the structure and mouth-feel of the wine. The wine was matured in french oak barrels with 25% new oak. It was matured in oak for 11 months before bottling. The wine has then been bottle aged for a further 10 months before release.
Planted in 1985, the Grenache is grown by our selected grape grower, the Wait family, whose vineyard is in the famous and well-renown Blewitt Springs within the McLaren Vale region. The Wait family also supplies Grenache for our well-regarded McLaren Vale GSM. The soil type in this sub-region is known to produce very special wines with a point of difference and wines for intense flavour and fullness on the palate. The soil type is sandy loam over shale.
This is an exceptional and complex wine and has a great presence. The complexities show characters of whole bunches and stalks. The wine has intense bouquet, perfectly balanced and long tasting palate. The palate has lovely cherry and ripe plum fruit characters and lovely smooth milk chocolate finish.
