The Other Wine Co Barbera 2022 marks their second vintage of this varietal. Although new to the label, Barbera is a familiar friend to winemaker Matt Large, who has spent numerous vintages in Piedmont mastering the art of Italian grapes under the guidance of experts like Luigi Oddero. Since joining The Other Wine Co., he has been on the lookout for local opportunities and was thrilled to acquire this parcel of Barbera.

The wine was made using whole berries in an open fermenter with about 10% whole bunches. It was basket pressed into seasoned 500L puncheons and then blended in a concrete vat before bottling. This addition to the portfolio stands out from the typical tutti frutti Barbera. Instead, it features optimal fruit characteristics with notes of black Bing cherries, acai, and dried blueberries, complemented by red toffee apple and black licorice. Aromas of allspice, nigella seed, and dried Ancho chilies mingle with hints of sage leaf, nettle, and dried fig. The wine is rich with dark, deep earthy spice and presents an aromatic complexity. It features puffs of lifted acidity and fine powdery tannins, embodying the approachable Barbera style while offering a captivating perfume. This excellent value wine is ready to be enjoyed now, ideally paired with rice, beans, and mole sauce.
