Bondar Rayner Vineyard Grenache 2023
The Bondar Rayner Grenache 2023 is sourced from the western side of their 1970-planted Grenache block on the Rayner Vineyard. Situated in an area where yields are lower with smaller berries and bunches, and where the vines face gently east, avoiding the hot, late afternoon sun. This block, planted on sand, is dry-grown and managed organically, with the fruit being hand-picked.
The aim for the Rayner Grenache is to achieve a balance of prettiness and savouriness, presenting a more refined expression of the variety. Bondar believes that the 1970 block inherently seeks to produce this style, so they endeavor to let it express itself as authentically as possible. To enhance this expression, they opt for earlier harvesting to capture the essence of red fruits and herbs. Around 20% whole bunch fermentation is employed to introduce additional tannins from the stalks, contributing to the wine's aging potential and adding layers of complexity to its flavors. Following fermentation and aging for approximately six months in ceramic eggs and old French barrels, the wine is bottled without fining or filtration.
