Ministry of Clouds Shiraz 2024
The 2024 Ministry of Clouds Shiraz is an exercise in "slender power," representing a modern, detail-oriented shift for McLaren Vale Shiraz. It is crafted from a blend of two distinct sub-regions: the deep sands of Blewitt Springs, which contribute perfume and brightness, and the shallow bedrock of the Onkaparinga Rocks vineyard, providing structure and fragrance.
On the nose, the wine is highly expressive and trilling with red fruits—think redcurrants, tart blackberry, and goji berry—interwoven with sophisticated notes of coal dust, rose petals, and Earl Grey tea. There is a distinct savory edge characterized by bunchy spices, including coriander seed, green cardamom, and white pepper.
The palate is agreeably light-weighted yet deeply flavored, striking a balance between nervy acidity and a fleshy fruit weight. It presents a seamless, "gossamer" layering that feels effortless despite the forensic precision of its construction. Fine, mineral tannins file down the finish, which is long and punctuated by a "sweet and sour" tamarind-like pop. More Rhône-like in its elegance than a traditional, heavy-set Australian Shiraz, this wine is designed for the table, pairing exceptionally well with smoky dishes like a spicy Catalan fish stew.
