The Phase Three Wines Dero Syrah 2023 is a bold expression, blending the power of Ebenezer fruit with the structure and complexity of Eden Valley sites. This vintage is dominated by fruit from Adrian Hoffmann’s DV Wolf’s Block and Sand Block, complemented by Mark Bartholomaeus’s historic Gnarly & Mighty Vineyard, planted in the late 1800s, and Nathan Burley’s dry-grown vines in Flaxman Valley. A back-vintage Barrique of 2022 Syrah adds depth, contributing dark, brooding intensity. With an average vine age of nearly 80 years, this blend tells a rich story.  

Hand-picked in small parcels at various ripening stages, the fruit underwent long, cool whole-cluster fermentations before being basket-pressed. Aging took place over 17 months in a mix of new, second-fill, and seasoned French oak barriques, stored in a cool cellar. Only the finest barrels were selected and blended in early spring, with all transfers done by gravity. After a short time in tank, 2,200 bottles were filled without fining or filtration.  

The 2023 Dero Syrah is deep, vibrant, and complex, benefiting from generous air to reveal its full character. True to tradition, the family played a hands-on role in bottling, with the kids bagging bottles and Mum and Dad wielding glue guns in their signature style.
