The Clare Red Wine is a blend of Bordeaux varieties made in a Loire style, offering vibrant, bright fruits and soft tannins. This wine is drawn from the Vivian, Parish and Gullyview Vineyards, with vines planted in 1930 and 1998. The vineyards are rooted in red clay over limestone soils, known locally as Terra Rossa, which contribute structure and freshness to the blend.

The final composition is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, 11% Grenache, 7% Malbec, 4% Carignan and 2% Sciacarello. All fruit was hand harvested and sorted in the vineyard before being destemmed, retaining approximately 50% whole berries and no whole bunch inclusion.

Fermentation occurred naturally in open-top steel fermenters, with the cap hand plunged twice daily. The wine spent two weeks on skins before free-run juice and pressings were combined, then settled off gross lees for seven days. It was aged for 12 months in Slavonian oak foudre before being racked to stainless steel for a further four months. The wine was neither fined nor filtered.

Potpourri, peanuts, boysenberry, earth and sweet plum flavours all make appearances, though the truth is that every time you put this anywhere near your nose/mouth, you detect something different.
