Grape Variety:
100% Shiraz from 109-year-old vines, grown on the Henschke Mount Edelstone Vineyard in Eden Valley. The vineyard is managed with organic and biodynamic practices.

Maturation:
Matured in 9% new and 91% seasoned oak hogsheads (80% French, 20% American) for 18 months prior to blending and bottling.

Wine Description:
Deep crimson with ruby hues. Intensely fragrant aromas of blackberry, blueberry, and Satsuma plum, with signature spices of black, white, and green peppercorn, wild sage, bay leaf, and bundled thyme.
The palate is plush, spicy, and complex, featuring black and blue fruits, dark licorice, and fresh-cut herbs, framed by elegant acidity and fine, velvety tannins. The finish is exceptionally long and detailed.

Background:
"Mount Edelstone" means “gemstone” in German—a reference to yellow opals once found in the area. The vineyard was planted in 1912 by Ronald Angas, a descendant of George Fife Angas.
Unusually for its time, it was planted solely to Shiraz. The soil is derived from 500-million-year-old geology—deep red-brown clay-loam over clay—leading to low yields from dry-grown, ungrafted centenarian vines.
First bottled in 1952 by Cyril Henschke, Mount Edelstone has been continuously crafted by the Henschke family and is arguably Australia's longest consecutively-produced single-vineyard wine. The vineyard was acquired by Cyril Henschke in 1974.

Vintage Description:
Average winter rainfall in 2020 was followed by even budburst and good fruitfulness. Significant frost and a cloudy spring were followed by good pre-flowering rains.
Late-flowering varieties were affected by heat in late November and strong winds in December, though the crop remained disease-free.
A cool, dry summer—the coolest in 19 years—followed by a warm autumn led to excellent ripening, colour, and tannin development.
The 2021 vintage is considered a standout of the decade for its complexity, varietal purity, and balance.

Alc/Vol: 14.5%
