Grape Variety:
100% Shiraz grown on The Wheelwright Vineyard on the Henschke Eden Valley property, managed with organic and biodynamic practices.

Maturation:
Matured in 10% new and 90% seasoned oak hogsheads (82% French, 18% American) for 18 months before blending and bottling.

Wine Description:
Deep crimson with violet hues. Captivating aromas of raspberry, Satsuma plum, and blackberry, entwined with garrigue herbs, black peppercorn, nutmeg, anise, violets, and wild lavender.
A vibrant core of mulberry and blueberry is supported by white pepper and violets, bright acidity, fine texture, and powerful fine-grained tannins building on a long, spicy finish.

Background:
First released to commemorate 150 years of Henschke winemaking, this wine pays tribute to founder Johann Christian Henschke (1803–1873), a skilled stonemason and wheelwright who arrived in 1841 and established the winery in 1868.
The wine is made from old-vine Shiraz planted in 1968 by Cyril Henschke near Eden Valley (470m altitude). According to the Barossa Old Vine Charter, “old vine” refers to vines ≥ 35 years old.

Vintage Description:
Winter 2020 brought average rainfall and good budburst. Significant frost occurred, followed by a cloudy spring with good pre-flowering rain. Late-flowering varieties suffered from late November heat and early December wind damage, but the crop remained disease-free.
January was dry, followed by perfectly timed rain in early February. A cool, dry summer—the coolest in 19 years—was followed by a warm autumn that allowed excellent ripening.
The 2021 vintage is considered a standout of the decade, with exceptional varietal expression and balance. Comparable to high-quality vintages like 1986, 2002, 2005, and 2015.

Cellaring Potential:
Exceptional vintage; 30+ years (from vintage). Reviewed June 2024.

Alc/Vol: 14.5%
