Picture this: It's March 2014, and Joel Mattschoss, a grape guru hailing from the Barossa Valley, is feeling lucky. How lucky, you ask? Well, lucky enough to snag some top-notch fruit from a prime spot in the Eden Valley. Talk about a jackpot!
Now, let's rewind a bit to the 1800s. The Polhner family settles in the Barossa foothills way back in 1858, carving out a slice of paradise for themselves. Fast forward 150 years, and the torch passes to the larger-than-life Bob McLean, an Aussie wine industry legend.
Bob and Joel? They're tight like two peas in a pod. So when Joel gets his hands on that primo fruit in 2014, you know Bob's got something to do with it. It's a match made in wine heaven!
Enter Pierre-Henri Morel, a Frenchman with a nose for fine wine. Fresh off the boat from the Northern Rhone, Pierre-Henri takes one whiff of that fruit and is instantly transported back to his homeland. Talk about a trip down memory lane!
Together, Joel and Pierre-Henri decide to work their magic on the 2014 vintage. Hand-picking, hand-destemming – you name it, they're on it. It's a labor of love, fueled by their shared passion for premium wines and killer terroirs.
But the story doesn't stop there. In 2016, Love Over Gold decides to spread its wings and plant a new block of vines, dubbed Avenue to Gold. It's all about growth, baby!
Then, tragedy strikes. Bob McLean, the man himself, shuffles off this mortal coil. But fear not – Joel, Pierre, and a couple of pals step up to the plate, becoming the proud custodians of Bob's legacy.
And thus, Love Over Gold Estate is born. The name? A nod to the vineyards, lovingly planted over historic goldfields in the Eden Valley. It's a testament to the land's rich history and the passion of those who tend to it.
Fast forward to October 2018, and after 1,700 days of blood, sweat, and grapes, the first wine hits the shelves. And just like that, a new chapter in this epic saga begins. Cheers to Love Over Gold – where every sip tells a tale as old as time itself!
