Back in 1974, at the sprightly age of 76, with nearly six decades of winemaking under his belt, the legendary Sydney Hamilton (1898-1987) embarked on a grand adventure. His mission? To find the perfect spot in Coonawarra, known for its glorious 'Terra Rossa' soil, to fulfill a lifelong dream.
And what was that dream, you ask? To cultivate and craft the ultimate Australian Cabernet Sauvignon, of course! With a nod to his English ancestor, Lord Leconfield, Sydney christened his estate as Leconfield and began weaving his magic.
Fast forward to today, and Leconfield Coonawarra wines are the stuff of legend. They embody the very soul of this iconic South Australian wine region, boasting richness, elegance, and a downright seductive charm.
At the heart of it all is their flagship, the Cabernet Sauvignon, which has garnered rave reviews and a stellar reputation over the years. But that's not all – Sydney's foresight in planting Riesling vines back in '74 has paid off in spades, with their Riesling now setting the benchmark for the variety in Coonawarra.
And let's not forget about Merlot! With Paul Gordon's wizardry in the winery, Leconfield Coonawarra Merlot has risen to superstardom, earning its stripes as one of the finest examples of the varietal in all of Australia.
