Since the inaugural vintage of Charles Melton Wines in 1984, this intimate Barossa Valley winery has garnered acclaim on both a national and international scale for its exquisite red table wines.
Embarking on a journey that spans from the delicate 'The Rose of Virginia' to the pinnacle of Australia's Rhone-style reds with 'Nine Popes,' Charlie Melton has crafted a diverse range of wines. In addition to small batches of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sparkling Shiraz, Charles Melton stands as the sole Australian producer of a vin-santo styled dessert wine, known as Sotto di Ferro.
A trailblazer in recognizing the intrinsic value of Barossa's old vineyard Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro, Charlie Melton played a pivotal role in preserving the viticultural heritage of the region. In an era when others were uprooting Shiraz vines for trendier varieties, Charlie championed the cause, convincing farmers to preserve their historic vineyards. Alongside a select group of winemakers, he became a guardian of Barossa's viticultural legacy.
Originally hailing from Sydney, Charlie has become an icon in the Barossa, having made the valley his home since 1974. With over 35 years of winemaking experience in the Barossa, Charlie's journey began as an apprentice to Peter Lehmann, where he honed his understanding of the region's fruit. In the early '80s, Charlie joined forces with a like-minded team of Barossa winemakers, united in their mission to revive undervalued varieties like Grenache and Shiraz. These varieties remain the backbone of Charles Melton's portfolio, a testament to Charlie's unwavering commitment to the essence and authenticity of Barossa's winemaking heritage.
